Set in a retro-futuristic world, the series follows XJ-9, a sophisticated, highly-advanced humanoid robot created by the eccentric, overprotective scientist Dr. Nora Wakeman. Designed primarily as a global defender, XJ-9 possesses a vast arsenal of destructive weaponry, superhuman strength, and incredible agility. However, despite her immense metallic capabilities and world-saving duties, she yearns for something remarkably ordinary: to be a regular teenage girl. Adopting the chosen name Jenny Wakeman, she desperately desires to fit in, hang out with normal peers, and experience human emotions.Jenny's primary obstacle in achieving a normal social life is her creator and "mother," Dr. Wakeman. Wakeman constantly monitors Jenny, viewing her strictly as a piece of military hardware rather than an adolescent, which leads to frequent, humorous friction between them. Eager to escape maternal surveillance, Jenny sneaks out to Tremorton High School, where she befriends two neighborhood kids: Brad Carbunkle, an adventurous and supportive thrill-seeker, and his
younger brother, Tuck, an energetic elementary schooler. Brad and Tuck readily accept Jenny for who she is, bringing her into their circle and helping her navigate the complex, often humiliating social hierarchies of high school.Complicating Jenny’s aspirations for normalcy is her fierce rivalry with the Crust Cousins, Brit and Tiff, two snobby, popular teenage girls who relentlessly bully Jenny and mock her robotic nature. Furthermore, high school brings the complications of adolescent romance, notably when Jenny develops a heavy crush on a handsome, dim-witted boy named Kenny, though her robotic mishaps often ruin her chances.Despite wanting to attend dances, gossip, and shop at the mall like any human teenager, Jenny's heroic destiny continually interrupts. She is forced to constantly balance her social ambitions with defending Earth from bizarre, persistent threats. Her most prominent recurring nemesis is the Crustaceous Empire, an antagonistic race of
extraterrestrial bugs led by the arrogant Queen Vexus, who repeatedly attempts to conquer Earth and frequently tries to recruit Jenny to their cause by appealing to her feelings of being an outcast among humans. Other threats include Dr. Wakeman’s eccentric rogue inventions, rogue machines, and time-traveling anomalies.Throughout the series, Jenny must constantly grapple with her dual identity. She navigates the painful heartaches of teenage rejection, the embarrassing overprotectiveness of her mother, and the physical limitations and maintenance of her mechanical body. Ultimately, the overarching plot centers on Jenny's relentless perseverance to prove that despite having a titanium shell, she possesses a genuine heart, successfully bridging the gap between cold machinery and the warmth of genuine teenage humanity.
