On her thirteenth birthday, ambitious and insecure Anne Boonchuy is manipulated by her wealthy best friend, Sasha Waybright, into stealing a mysterious magical music box. Upon opening it, the artifact transports Anne to Amphibia, a wild, swampy planet populated by talking anthropomorphic amphibians. Separated from her friends, Anne is taken in by the Plantars: excitable young pollywog Polly, lovable and naive grandfather Hop Pop, and Sprig, an adventurous frog who becomes her first true friend. Initially desperate just to survive and find a way home, Anne slowly adapts to swamp life, learning humility, empathy, and genuine leadership as she helps the local townsfolk overcome various perils.Meanwhile, Sasha has fallen in with Captain Grime, a ruthless toad soldier stationed in the regional garrison, and uses her manipulative social tactics to rise through the military ranks. Anne eventually reunites with Sasha, but their friendship fractures due to Sasha’s toxic need for control and her betrayal of the Plantars. Around the same time, the trio discovers that the third human, the timid and studious Marcy Wu, has been living among the royal court in Newtopia, having willingly orchestrated their exile because she feared being separated from them. Driven by guilt, Marcy helps the girls uncover the truth
behind the music box: it is a conduit of immense cosmic power meant to be wielded by three prophesied heroes to conquer other worlds. The climax of the second season features a dramatic coup in Newtopia orchestrated by King Andrias, a seemingly benevolent ruler who is secretly bound to an ancient, malevolent entity known as The Core. When Andrias turns on them, Sasha redeems herself by standing against the king, leading a massive rebellion alongside the frogs, toads, and newts. During a brutal escape, Marcy is seemingly possessed and incapacitated by The Core, while Anne and the Plantars are forcefully banished back to Earth through a portal, leaving Sasha behind.Back in Los Angeles, Anne struggles to hide her amphibious
surrogate family while trying to reopen the portal to save Marcy and Sasha. The final arc escalates into an apocalyptic showdown when The Core invades Earth using a colossal floating moon. In the emotional finale, Anne harnesses the full, god-like power of the music box to destroy the moon, sacrificing her mortal life in the process. Resurrected by a higher cosmic deity who offers her ultimate dominion, Anne chooses instead to return to her mortal life. Years later, Anne, Sasha, and Marcy grow up and part ways as changed young women, forever bonded by their extraordinary adventures.
