Set in New Jersey, *Megas XLR* follows the misadventures of Coop, an overweight, lazy, yet brilliantly inventive mechanic, and his dim-witted, easygoing best friend, Jamie. Their mundane lives are upended when Coop discovers a giant, advanced mecha robot named MEGAS (Mechanized Earth Guard Attack System) in a local junkyard. The robot originally fell through a time portal sent by the Glorft, a race of hostile, tentacled alien conquerors from the future.K48, a
freedom fighter from the future, had originally stolen MEGAS to save Earth from Glorft domination. She intended to send the robot back in time to a point just before the final human defeat, installing a time-displacement device. However, Coop modifies the robot extensively, replacing its head with a classic muscle-car hood, adding flame decals, and swapping the complex futuristic control interface with an old arcade cabinet stick and a driver's seat. When K48—now calling herself Kiva—arrives in the past to retrieve MEGAS, she discovers Coop at the controls. Because of his customized controls, only Coop can pilot the machine. Furthermore, the time-drive is destroyed during a skirmish, trapping Kiva in the present and forcing her to reluctantly train Coop as a defender of Earth.Throughout the series, Coop’s absolute disregard for collateral damage and his penchant for reckless, over-the-top upgrades turn every
alien encounter into a catastrophic block party. While Kiva desperately tries to instill military discipline and tactical strategy into Coop, he relies entirely on improvisation, video game logic, and massive firepower to solve problems. Despite his lazy demeanor, Coop possesses a deep, genuine desire to protect his home and friends, often saving the day through sheer, accidental brilliance. The overarching narrative centers on the relentless pursuit of MEGAS by the Glorft, led by the ruthless Warmonger Gorrath, who wants the robot's ultimate weapon to conquer the galaxy. Alongside the Glorft, Coop, Jamie, and Kiva face a bizarre rogues' gallery of cosmic threats, including intergalactic bounty hunters, evil clones, rogue AI, and bizarre monsters. Jamie usually provides sarcastic commentary while attempting to use MEGAS for petty personal gains, while Kiva acts as the voice of reason. Ultimately, the trio must continuously thwart Gorrath’s invasions and countless other cosmic disasters, all while accidentally destroying half of New Jersey in the process.
