Set in New Jersey, *Megas XLR* follows the misadventures of Coop, an overweight, lazy, yet brilliantly inventive mechanic, and his dim-witted, easygoing best friend, Jamie. Their mundane lives are upended when Coop discovers a giant, advanced mecha robot named MEGAS (Mechanized Earth Guard Attack System) in a local junkyard. The robot originally fell through a time portal sent by the Glorft, a race of hostile, tentacled alien conquerors from the future.K48, a freedom fighter from the future, had originally stolen MEGAS to save Earth from Glorft domination. She intended to send the robot back in time to a point just before the final human defeat, installing a time-displacement device. However, Coop modifies the robot extensively, replacing its head with a classic muscle-car hood, adding flame decals, and swapping the complex futuristic control interface with an old arcade cabinet stick and a driver's seat. When K48—now calling herself Kiva—arrives in the past to retrieve MEGAS, she discovers Coop at the controls. Because of his customized controls, only Coop can pilot the machine.
