The series revolves around the clandestine operations of Airwolf, a Mach 1-plus supersonic stealth helicopter armed with devastating firepower, created by the brilliant and eccentric Dr. Charles Moffet. When Moffet betrays the CIA and steals the chopper, escaping to Libya, the secretive government branch known as "The Firm" needs it back. To retrieve the weapon, Deputy Director Michael Coldsmith-Briggs III, known as "Archangel," recruits Stringfellow Hawke, a reclusive, emotionally scarred Vietnam War veteran and master aviator.Hawke lives in a secluded mountain cabin, spending his days playing the cello and searching for his brother, St. John, who has been
missing in action since Vietnam. Initially reluctant to help, Hawke only agrees to fly Airwolf on top-secret missions for The Firm on one absolute condition: The CIA must use all its global resources to officially locate and rescue St. John. Hawke is assisted by Dominic Santini, his surrogate father figure and a gritty, pragmatic
helicopter pilot who runs Santini Air.Once Airwolf is successfully retrieved and hidden in a secure, natural cave known as "The Valley of the Gods," Hawke and Dominic use it to combat rogue elements, foreign agents, international terrorists, and corporate corruption. Operating under the guise of ordinary civilian pilots, they fly dangerous missions for Archangel. However, Hawke constantly walks a moral tightrope, distrustful of The Firm and driven primarily by his personal demons, deep-seated grief, and the burning desire to reunite with his lost brother. The dramatic tension of the series is driven by the constant danger of exposure, as various enemy intelligence agencies and ruthless syndicates attempt to steal Airwolf for themselves. Hawke must master the ship's terrifying offensive and defensive capabilities while keeping its existence a heavily guarded secret. Throughout numerous high-stakes battles in the skies—ranging from dogfights with Soviet MiGs to neutralizing domestic criminal masterminds—Hawke’s primary motivation remains unchanged: surviving the relentless violence long enough to find out if St. John is still alive, making every flight a desperate search for closure amidst a relentless war of espionage.
