The South Korean occult thriller *Revenant* follows San-yeong, an exhausted part-time worker struggling to support her delusional mother while grieving her
estranged father, Professor Ku Kang-mo. Following Kang-mo’s mysterious suicide, San-yeong inherits a peculiar family heirloom: a traditional red hair ribbon. Unbeknownst to her, this artifact is a cursed vessel trapping a malicious ghost.Upon touching the ribbon, San-yeong becomes possessed by the evil spirit. Simultaneously, Yeom Hae-sang, a wealthy and reclusive folklorist who possesses the rare ability to see ghosts, recognizes the entity. Hae-sang realizes this is the exact same demon that brutally murdered his mother decades ago. Desperate for closure and revenge, Hae-sang approaches San-yeong, proposing an alliance to track down the spirit and uncover its true identity. They are soon joined by Lee Hong-sae, a skeptical
homicide detective investigating a string of bizarre, supernatural suicides linked to San-yeong. Initially dismissive of the paranormal, Hong-sae is forced to confront harsh realities as the body count rises and evidence points directly to San-yeong. As the supernatural web tightens, Hae-sang discovers that Professor Kang-mo was actively investigating the ghost before his death. Kang-mo had sought to banish the entity by unearthing five sacred objects associated with its creation, but he was killed by the spirit before he could finish the ritual.Driven by her desperate desire to be rid of the entity—which is slowly blinding her and consuming her life—San-yeong joins Hae-sang in picking up her late father’s quest. The trio dives deep into Korea’s dark folklore, uncovering a horrific history of greed, child sacrifice, and familial betrayal. They learn that the ghost is the spirit of a young girl who was wrongfully murdered as a human offering to bring wealth to a village.Tension peaks as the spirit forces San-yeong to commit atrocities against her will, threatening to permanently consume her soul if she gives up the will to live. Hae-sang fights tirelessly to protect San-yeong, while Hong-sae bridges the gap between police logic and occult reality. In a harrowing climax, they discover the final sacred object and perform the ultimate exorcism. However, the victory comes with heartbreaking emotional costs. San-yeong ultimately realizes that to destroy the monster, she must also conquer her own inner despair. Choosing life, she defeats the entity, finally breaking the generational curse and allowing both the living and the dead to find peace.
