Set in a squalid, damp, and decaying flat in Hammersmith, London, *Bottom* chronicles the miserable, violent, and utterly hopeless lives of Richard Richard and Edward Elizabeth Hitler, two grotesque, permanently unemployed, and desperately lonely thirty-somethings. Rich is an uptight, pedantic virgin who fancies himself a suave intellectual and romantic, despite possessing zero social skills and an aggressively repulsive demeanor. Eddie is his lazy, alcoholic, flatulence-prone, and sociopathic roommate who spends his days drinking cheap cider, reading pornographic magazines, and dreaming up schemes to exploit Rich. Their relationship is defined by a volatile cycle of extreme physical violence,
psychological torture, and pathetic codependency, as neither can afford to live alone.Driven by a relentless, pathetic desperation to lose their virginity and escape their bleak existence, the duo embarks on a series of catastrophically misguided adventures. Whether they are attempting to pick up women on New Year's Eve, venturing out to a local pub, or trying to cook a romantic dinner for two predatory local women, their towering delusions inevitably collide with harsh reality. Every plot is catalyzed by Rich’s pretentious aspirations, which are systematically sabotaged by Eddie’s cynical sabotage, sheer incompetence, or aggressive stupidity.Throughout their misadventures, the flat serves as a claustrophobic chamber of horrors where they inflict cartoonish, bone-crunching violence upon one another using frying pans, cricket bats, and kitchen knives, only to instantly bounce back as if nothing happened. They harbor a deep-seated hatred for each other, yet they are hopelessly bound together by their total societal rejection. In moments of rare vulnerability, they briefly bond over their shared misery, aging bodies, and complete lack of prospects, only for the fragile truce to shatter instantly into another brutal brawl. The overarching storyline is not one of
personal growth, but of inevitable regression and eternal damnation. Rich and Eddie are trapped in a self-inflicted purgatory of their own making. In the series finale, after a rare and fleeting night of actual romantic success with two women, Eddie accidentally kills Rich by bashing his head in with a frying pan during a petty argument over the spoils. Showing no remorse, Eddie immediately tries to steal Rich’s trousers, only for Rich to miraculously resurrect. The series ends with the duo right back where they started: screaming at the top of their lungs, hurling vicious insults, and brutally beating each other to a bloody pulp, doomed to repeat their pathetic existence for eternity.
