He is instantly seduced by Dickie’s glamorous, effortless wealth and his sophisticated bohemian romance with girlfriend Marge Sherwood. Tom moves into Dickie’s villa, adopting his mannerisms, clothing, and lifestyle, rapidly developing an obsessive, possessive infatuation with him.As the weeks pass, Dickie grows increasingly bored and irritated by Tom’s relentless clinginess, sycophantic nature, and eerie mimicry. Sensing the impending rejection and terrified of losing his newfound luxury, Tom reaches a
psychological breaking point during a quiet boat excursion. When Dickie cruelly tells him he wants him to leave and cuts off emotional ties, a furious Tom bludgeons Dickie to death with an oar, sinking the small boat with Dickie’s body inside to conceal the crime.Rather than fleeing, Tom makes a calculated, audacious decision to assume Dickie's identity. He moves into Dickie’s upscale Rome apartment, forging his signature to access his substantial bank accounts and writing dismissive letters to Marge and Dickie’s father to keep them at bay. However, keeping the elaborate deception alive proves perilous. Freddie Miles, an astute friend of Dickie’s, visits the apartment and quickly grows suspicious of the sudden lifestyle changes and Tom's nervous demeanor. To protect his secret, Tom bludgeons Freddie to death as well, dumping the body and staging the scene to look like a robbery gone wrong. This second murder triggers a massive international
police investigation led by the meticulous Inspector Ravini. Tom orchestrates a desperate shell game of evasion, constantly moving between Rome, Palermo, Venice, and San Remo, while continually shifting aliases and dodging suspicion. He manages to charm local authorities and even convinces a skeptical Marge that Dickie has simply gone into hiding to avoid the police investigation.Ultimately, Tom escapes justice entirely. He fakes Dickie's suicide, leaves his forged inheritance to Marge, and flees to Venice. The series concludes with Inspector Ravini finally discovering the truth after mistakenly showing a photograph of Tom to a high-society associate who recognizes him, but by then, Tom has already slipped away, triumphant, wealthy, and entirely unrepentant.
