Boxing has long been a favorite subject for filmmakers, offering raw drama, physical intensity, and stories of resilience. These movies transcend the sport, delivering powerful narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide. Here are the must-watch films that every boxing fan—or film buff—should add to their list.

Classic Underdog Stories

• Rocky (1976) – The quintessential boxing movie that introduced the world to Apollo Creed, Adrian, and the iconic training montage. Sylvester Stallone’s masterpiece remains a cultural touchstone.
• Raging Bull (1980) – Martin Scorsese’s black-and-white biopic of Jake LaMotta is a brutal, poetic exploration of a fighter’s self-destruction and redemption. Robert De Niro’s performance is legendary.
• Million Dollar Baby (2004) – Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winning drama about an aging trainer (Eastwood) and his determined female protégé (Hilary Swank) is both heartbreaking and triumphant.

Modern Grit and Realism

• The Fighter (2010) – Based on the true story of Micky Ward and Dickie Eklund, this film stars Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale (who won an Oscar for his role). The raw boxing sequences and family dynamics shine.
• Creed (2015) – A modern reboot of the Rocky saga, starring Michael B. Jordan as Donnie Creed, Apollo Creed’s son, and Sylvester Stallone reprising his iconic role. The training scenes and emotional depth are top-tier.
• Southpaw (2015) – Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a powerhouse performance as a down-and-out fighter trying to rebuild his life and career. The cinematography and fight choreography are spectacular.

Television has also embraced the boxing world, offering serialized drama and behind-the-scenes storytelling. These shows bring the intensity of the ring into your living room with compelling characters and high-stakes narratives.

Dramatic Series That Pack a Punch

• Warrior (2019–2023) – Created by Justin Lin and starring Andrew Koji, this series follows a martial artist-turned-underground fighter in 1870s San Francisco. While not pure boxing, the fight choreography and historical setting are gripping.

Documentaries That Go the Distance

• Ali (2001) – Michael Mann’s biopic of Muhammad Ali stars Will Smith in an Oscar-winning role. The film blends boxing history with Ali’s larger-than-life personality.
• I Am Ali (2014) – A deeply personal documentary using home videos and interviews to reveal the man behind the myth. It’s a must-watch for fans of the sport’s history.
• The Last Dance (2020) – While primarily about Michael Jordan, this docuseries includes segments on Mike Tyson’s rise, offering a fascinating crossover between boxing and basketball lore.

Whether you prefer the cinematic grandeur of a feature film or the serialized storytelling of a TV show, these picks deliver the best of boxing’s dramatic and athletic prowess. From the golden age of Rocky to modern hits like Creed, there’s never been a better time to step into the ring—from the comfort of your couch.
