Five young friends—siblings Sally and Franklin Hardesty, along with their friends Jerry, Kirk, and Pam—are traveling in a customized van through the sun-scorched backroads of Texas. Their primary motivation is checking on the grave of Sally and Franklin’s grandfather, driven by disturbing news reports of grave-robbing and desecration in the local area. Along the journey, they pick up a hitchhiker whose erratic, unsettling behavior and bizarre self-harm quickly terrorize the group, forcing them to forcefully expel him from the vehicle.Looking for a place to rest, use a telephone, and refuel, they detour to the Hardestys’ old, dilapidated family homestead. While Sally and Franklin reminisce, Kirk and Pam venture off to find a local swimming hole, discovering an eerie, isolated farmhouse nearby. Kirk enters the house looking for gasoline, only to be brutally attacked and killed by Leatherface, a hulking, silent man wearing a mask made of human skin and wielding a roaring chainsaw.Concerned by Kirk's prolonged absence, Pam investigates the house, walking into a horrific chamber macabre decorated with furniture and ornaments fashioned from human bones and skin. Panicking, she is captured by Leatherface and subjected to a similarly gruesome fate. As night falls, Jerry sets out to search for his missing friends. He discovers Pam alive, stuffed inside a swinging freezer, before Leatherface ambushes and murders him as well.Left behind at the van, Sally and a disabled Franklin grow frantic. They push their wheelchairs and stumble into the pitch-black woods to search for the others. Leatherface emerges from the shadows and slaughters Franklin with a chainsaw. Fleeing in absolute terror, Sally reaches the same slaughterhouse-like farmhouse and manages to break inside, only to discover the remaining members of the deranged family: Leatherface, his brother the Hitchhiker, and their patriarch, an ancient, blood-drinking gas station proprietor.Tied to a makeshift chair, Sally is subjected to relentless psychological torture and sadistic mockery by the psychotic clan, who attempt to have their decrepit grandfather bludgeon her to death with a hammer. Miraculously, Sally escapes their clutches, diving through a second-story glass window. Pursued relentlessly by the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface through the dark, brush-filled night, Sally manages to flag down a passing pickup truck. As the driver intervenes, Leatherface slashes at the truck, but Sally escapes in the vehicle, laughing and screaming hysterically in the truck bed, while a defeated Leatherface furiously swings his chainsaw at the empty highway in the rising dawn.
