Set in the vapid, hyper-materialistic world of 1980s Manhattan, Patrick Bateman is a wealthy, twenty-seven-year-old investment banker who lives a life of carefully curated perfection. By day, he navigates the cutthroat culture of Wall Street, obsessing over business cards, reservations at exclusive restaurants, and the superficial status symbols of his peers. By night, however, Bateman descends into a harrowing abyss of psychopathy. Beneath his polished, designer-clad exterior lies a hollow, sociopathic void that he attempts to fill through increasingly gruesome acts of violence.Bateman’s descent begins with his intense envy of his colleague, Paul Allen, whose superior business card and access to the city’s most coveted dining spots trigger a murderous rage. After luring Allen to his apartment, Bateman brutally murders him with an axe, setting off a chain of increasingly erratic and depraved crimes. He targets prostitutes, homeless individuals, and anyone who threatens his fragile sense of superiority, all while maintaining his facade of normalcy. He meticulously chronicles his atrocities, though his confession to his lawyer, Harold Carnes, is met with dismissive laughter; Carnes assumes Bateman is merely joking, as he is convinced he recently had dinner with the supposedly dead Paul Allen. The film serves as a biting social satire, illustrating the numbness of a society so obsessed with status that it becomes literally unable to perceive the humanity—or the monstrousness—of those around it. Bateman’s internal monologue reveals a man desperately trying to feel something, yet finding only a terrifying detachment. His violence is not born of passion, but of a desperate, nihilistic attempt to assert control in a world that values image over substance. As the walls close in, Bateman’s reality fractures; his confessions are ignored, his crimes are seemingly erased, and his apartment is scrubbed of all evidence. Ultimately, Bateman remains trapped within his own gilded cage. He realizes that he can commit the most heinous acts imaginable without consequence, not because he is a criminal mastermind, but because the people in his social circle are too self-absorbed to notice his existence. He is a ghost in a suit, a man who has killed everything inside himself, left to wander the corridors of Wall Street, forever invisible and entirely irredeemable.
