The story follows Ushio Aotsuki, an ordinary middle school student whose life changes forever when he accidentally uncovers a
legendary monster pinned to a pillar in the basement of his family’s temple. The beast is Tora, a ferocious, man-eating tiger-like Yōkai who has been trapped for five hundred years. When Ushio inadvertently pulls out the "Beast Spear"—a mystical weapon that grants immense power at the cost of the wielder's humanity—he is forced to release Tora to save his friends from a sudden onslaught of rampaging spirits drawn by the spear's awakened aura.Initially, Ushio and Tora are uneasy allies. Tora constantly plots to devour the boy the moment the opportunity arises, while Ushio keeps a tight leash on the monster, threatening to impale him with the spear if he steps out of line. Despite their constant bickering, a complex bond of mutual respect and hidden affection forms as they traverse Japan, fighting supernatural threats. Ushio’s primary motivation is protecting innocent humans from malevolent Yōkai, while Tora is driven by a chaotic desire to fight strong opponents and occasionally sate his appetite, though he grows fiercely protective of Ushio.Their journey expands from local monster-of-the-week encounters into a massive, apocalyptic conflict against the Hakumen no Mono, a primordial, nine-tailed demon of unimaginable malice responsible for centuries of human and Yōkai suffering. This revelation unites scattered human exorcist clans and various Yōkai factions into a desperate global alliance. As the final war approaches, Ushio faces the ultimate psychological burden of the Beast Spear: every time he unleashes its power, the weapon attempts to consume his soul, slowly transforming him into a mindless beast himself.During the climactic showdown at sea, Ushio fully succumbs to the spear's curse, losing his memories and attacking his friends. In a heartbreaking and heroic display of loyalty, Tora risks his own life to pull Ushio back from the brink of oblivion, reminding him of their shared journey. Together, Ushio and Tora unleash their combined fury against the Hakumen no Mono, ultimately destroying the ancient evil once and for all. However, victory comes at a devastating cost. As the battle concludes, Tora’s existence begins to fade because he was originally born from human hatred of the monster, and with the Hakumen no Mono gone, he dissolves into light, leaving Ushio heartbroken. Months later, Ushio returns to a normal life, forever changed by his
extraordinary adventure and carrying the memory of his fierce, monstrous best friend.
