Set in a retro-futuristic New York City, *Maniac* follows Annie Landsberg and Owen Milgrim, two troubled strangers brought together by a radical pharmaceutical trial at Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech. Annie, haunted by the
accidental death of her sister and trapped in a cycle of self-destruction, joins the trial to numb her grief. Owen, the black sheep of a wealthy, corrupt industrialist family, suffers from debilitating schizophrenia and is desperate for a cure to prove his sanity to his skeptical relatives. They are recruited for a three-day experiment testing the "A" and "B" pills, designed by the brilliant but emotionally unstable Dr. James K. Mantleray to map the human psyche and eliminate all mental anguish. As the subjects ingest the pills, they are thrust into a series of surreal, genre-bending shared hallucinations. These vivid dreamscapes force them to inhabit various personas—ranging from a 1940s heist couple to a suburban couple in the 80s and even a pair of elven explorers—allowing them to process their trauma through allegorical conflicts. These simulations are overseen by GRTA, a sentient supercomputer grieving the loss of her creator, whose own
emotional breakdown threatens the stability of the participants' minds. As the lines between reality and simulation blur, Annie and Owen begin to influence each other's subconscious narratives, forming a profound, unconventional bond that defies the clinical coldness of the experiment.Their shared journey becomes a battle against the rigid, oppressive structure of the pharmaceutical program and their own internal demons. Dr. Mantleray, struggling with his own codependency issues, eventually loses control of the process, forcing the subjects to confront the raw, uncomfortable truths they have spent their lives suppressing. Ultimately, *Maniac* is not a story about finding a "cure" for human pain, but rather an exploration of the necessity of connection. By the trial’s end, Annie and Owen realize that their brokenness is not a flaw to be erased, but a fundamental part of the human experience. They emerge from the facility not "fixed" by science, but empowered by their shared vulnerability, choosing to leave their traumatic pasts behind and navigate the uncertain, messy reality of the world together.
