Derek Zoolander, a dim-witted but fiercely vain male supermodel, suffers a devastating career blow when reigning rival Hansel defeats him for the coveted Male Model of the Year award. Desperate to reinvent himself and regain his former glory, Derek decides to retire and return home to the blue-collar coal-mining community of Pennsylvania to reconnect with his disapproving father and brothers. However, his blue-collar roots reject him, leaving him feeling utterly alienated and purposeless.Sensing Derek's intense vulnerability, corrupt fashion icon Jacobim Mugatu and his sinister boss, evil mastermind Maury Ballstein, swoop in to exploit him. Mugatu brainwashes Derek using a hypnotic synth-pop song called "Relax" paired with flashing lights, transforming him into an unwitting, highly trained assassin. Derek's mission, orchestrated by the global fashion industry, is to assassinate the newly elected Prime Minister of Malaysia, a progressive leader whose anti-sweatshop platform threatens the multi-billion-dollar cheap labor market enjoyed by top designers.Meanwhile, ambitious Time magazine reporter Matilda Jeffries begins investigating the shadowy underbelly of the high-fashion world following a tragic gasoline fight accident that claims the lives of Derek’s closest model roommates. Realizing Derek has been brainwashed, Matilda teams up with Hansel, who has reluctantly joined forces with Derek after a legendary, underground walk-off fashion battle. Together, Matilda and Hansel deprogram Derek by triggering a nostalgic childhood memory, breaking Mugatu’s hypnotic trigger just in time. Now united, Derek, Hansel, and Matilda infiltrate Mugatu’s grand fashion show where the assassination is slated to take place. Disguised as a bizarre runway presentation featuring Mugatu’s avant-garde and ridiculously impractical avant-garde line, Derek takes the stage alongside Hansel. As the Prime Minister approaches the podium, Derek unveils a brand-new, never-before-seen facial expression—a look so powerfully mesmerizing it stops bullets mid-air. Derek intercepts the incoming projectile with his face, saving the Prime Minister's life and exposing the conspiracy to the world. In the chaotic aftermath, Mugatu attempts to murder Derek with a shuriken, but Derek effortlessly counters it with another immaculate, gravity-defying look. Mugatu is subsequently arrested, and the corrupt fashion syndicate collapses. Derek is hailed globally as a hero, marries Matilda, and settles down with their son, Derek Jr., while dedicating his retirement to establishing the "Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too."
