As a global pandemic of a ferocious, fast-acting pathogen turns infected humans into rabid, hyper-aggressive zombies, former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane finds himself thrust back into chaos. Driving through Philadelphia with his wife, Karin, and their two daughters, Gerry witnesses the devastating speed of the outbreak, where victims convulse and transform within seconds of being bitten. Narrowly escaping the collapsing city, the family is rescued by Gerry’s former boss, Thierry, and given sanctuary aboard a secure U.S. Navy command ship in the Atlantic Ocean. In exchange for his family's continued safety, Gerry is coerced into joining a desperate scientific expedition to unearth the origin of the pandemic and find a cure. Aboard a military transport, Gerry accompanies a young virologist to a U.S. military base in South Korea, where the first reports of the virus supposedly originated. Upon landing, the virologist tragically trips and accidentally shoots himself, leaving Gerry to navigate the overrun base alone. There, a scarred American CIA agent reveals that North Korea has successfully vaccinated its entire population by removing their teeth, and suggests that Israel may hold answers because they fortified their borders just before the outbreak began.Traveling to Jerusalem, Gerry meets secure wall officials who explain that they intercepted a misdirected radio transmission warning of the "Zombie" threat and acted immediately. However, the joyful singing of refugees celebrating their safety inadvertently provokes a massive horde outside the walls. The zombies form a horrific living mountain, scaling the towering barriers and plunging the city into utter pandemonium. Amidst the carnage, Gerry rescues a brave female Israeli soldier named Segen, and they commandeer a commercial airliner just as the city falls.Mid-flight, infected passengers who slipped aboard attack the remaining survivors. Gerry brilliantly detonates a grenade inside the cabin, breaching the fuselage and sucking the zombies out while managing to land the badly damaged plane in Wales. Injured and exhausted, Gerry and Segen trek to a World Health Organization facility. Realizing that the undead ignore the terminally ill because their bodies are useless as hosts, Gerry concocts a perilous plan. He injects himself with a lethal pathogen from the research vault, walking directly past the wandering zombies who ignore him entirely. This discovery leads to the creation of a cloaking vaccine, allowing humanity to fight back, reclaim its cities, and launch a global counter-offensive to win the war.
