In the year 1889, the isolated silver-mining community of Rejection, Nevada, finds itself gripped by terror when mysterious, unseen forces begin brutally slaughtering local miners deep within the subterranean tunnels. Seeking fortune rather than heroism, Hiram Gummer, the wealthy, fastidious, and entirely out-of-touch great-grandfather of Burt Gummer, arrives from the East Coast to inspect his failing family investment. Upon arrival, Hiram discovers that his miners have been decimated, leaving the town on the verge of financial ruin and populated by a scrappy, hardened group of frontier survivors, including the tough-talking saloon owner Christine Lord and the cynical foreman Juan Pedazo.Realizing that no more silver can be extracted until the menace is eliminated, Hiram reluctantly finances a makeshift defense. However, the initial attempt to investigate the mine goes disastrously wrong when the monstrous creatures launch a surface attack, demonstrating their terrifying speed, subterranean agility, and voracious appetite for human flesh. The townspeople soon realize they are dealing with giant, prehistoric worm-like beasts—dubbed "dirt dragons"—that hunt by sensing seismic vibrations in the earth. As the casualties mount, the community is forced to barricade themselves inside the town center, using whatever meager resources and improvised weaponry they can scavenge. Hiram, initially helpless and accustomed to servants doing his bidding, undergoes a profound character
transformation. Shedding his elegant Eastern suits for rugged frontier gear, he learns to embrace the harsh realities of the Wild West and taps into the latent tactical genius that clearly runs in the Gummer bloodline. With the monsters breaching their final defenses, Hiram takes charge of the desperate counterattack. Recognizing that standard firearms are insufficient, he orders the town's remaining blasting powder deployed into a trap. In a thrilling, explosive climax, Hiram lures the alpha creature above ground and detonates the massive charge, obliterating the beast and saving the surviving townspeople.Victorious, Hiram decides to abandon his plans of returning to comfortable civilization. He chooses instead to purchase the entire Rejection valley, officially renaming the settlement Perfection, and settling into his new life as a rugged frontiersman. He sends for a massive shipment of heavy artillery from the East, setting the stage for his family's legendary legacy of monster-hunting preparedness. The film concludes with the town celebrating their hard-won survival, forever changed by the prehistoric nightmare that brought them together and forged an
unlikely hero out of an aristocratic greenhorn.
