Theevandi follows the chaotic life of Bineesh Kumar, an ordinary young man whose fatal flaw is an uncontrollable addiction to chain-smoking. Set in a vibrant Kerala village, the film opens with Bineesh’s childhood, where he is introduced to smoking by his rebellious older cousin, Ramachandran. What begins as teenage curiosity quickly metamorphoses into a severe psychological and physical dependency that dictates every aspect of Bineesh’s adult life.As an adult, Bineesh’s addiction strains his relationships to their absolute breaking point. He cannot hold down a steady job, constantly borrows money from friends and family to fund his habit, and leaves a trail of ash and smoke wherever he goes. His obsession reaches a critical juncture when he falls in love with Devi, an intelligent, strong-willed
government employee and the daughter of a fierce anti-smoking activist. Devi initially tries to look past his vice, hoping her affection and logic will inspire him to change. However, Bineesh’s deceitfulness regarding his habit continually breaks her trust.Desperate to win Devi’s hand in marriage and earn the respect of her disapproving father, Bineesh makes grand, desperate promises to quit. He attempts various cold-turkey methods, patches, and psychological tricks, but the cravings always pull him back
into the abyss. The narrative escalates comically and tragically when Devi issues an ultimatum: either the cigarettes go, or she does. Unable to break the cycle on his own, Bineesh’s life spirals out of control, leading to explosive public altercations, hilarious failed interventions by his loyal yet equally dysfunctional friends, and a near-fatal health scare that forces him to confront the root of his escapism. The climax arrives during a tense local election where Bineesh, running for a minor political office largely to impress Devi, suffers a humiliating public relapse. Stripped of his pride and abandoned by everyone who cared about him, Bineesh hits rock bottom. Sitting alone in a haze of smoke, he finally recognizes the self-destructive nature of his addiction. In a powerful turning point, he chooses to check himself into a rigorous rehabilitation facility. Through immense suffering, emotional withdrawal, and deep introspection, Bineesh fights his demons. The film concludes on a hopeful, redemptive note, with a transformed Bineesh emerging clean, finally winning back Devi’s heart, and proving that while breaking a lifelong addiction is agonizingly difficult, personal reinvention is truly possible.
