The narrative centers on Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, and his wife, Hedwig, as they construct an idyllic domestic existence in a lush, sprawling home immediately adjacent to the concentration camp. Their daily routine is carefully curated to project normalcy and upper-middle-class comfort, complete with five children, grand garden parties, and leisurely afternoon swims. Hedwig takes immense pride in her vibrant greenhouse and immaculately landscaped yard, viewing the property as the realization of her ultimate bourgeois dream.Beneath this carefully maintained veneer of suburban bliss, the brutal reality of the Holocaust looms omnipresent. While Rudolf and Hedwig play with their children, the soundtrack of their lives is an unremitting background symphony of human suffering: the dull roars of the crematoria furnaces, distant gunshots, barking guard dogs, and the muffled cries of prisoners. Rudolf is entirely consumed by his bureaucratic duties, frequently retreating to his study to review architectural blueprints for more efficient gas chambers and crematoria. His motivation is absolute obedience and professional advancement within the machinery of the Reich, entirely compartmentalizing his familial tenderness from his horrific professional responsibilities. As the plot unfolds, subtle fractures begin to appear in the family's artificial paradise. Rudolf receives notice of an imminent transfer to Berlin, a promotion that requires him to oversee the administration of all concentration camps. While Rudolf views this as a career triumph, Hedwig is devastated, fiercely demanding that Rudolf appeal the decision so she and the children can remain in their beloved home. This conflict highlights the transactional nature of their marriage and Hedwig’s profound attachment to the fruits of her husband’s monstrous labor. Meanwhile, Rudolf’s aging mother visits, but she flees in the middle of the night, utterly disturbed and traumatized by the visible ash falling from the sky and the grim knowledge of what lies just beyond the garden wall. The dramatic tension culminates in Berlin, where Rudolf attends a lavish gala celebrating the logistics of mass murder. Amidst the glittering opulence, Rudolf experiences a sudden, visceral wave of nausea, dry-heaving in the darkened corridors of the building as he descends a stairwell—a rare physical manifestation of internal revulsion. The film concludes by flashing forward to the modern day, where museum workers meticulously clean the glass casings, exhibits, and silent hallways of the now-vacant Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial, contrasting the chilling historical banality of evil with the preservation of its devastating historical memory.
