Five young travelers—Sally Hardesty, her paraplegic brother Franklin, and their friends Jerry, Kirk, and Pam—road-trip through the scorching Texas countryside. Their primary motivation is checking on the Hardesty family grave following reports of local cemetery desecration and vandalism. Unknowingly, they veer off course and pick up a frantic, highly disturbed hitchhiker who mutters incoherently about slaughterhouses, mutilation, and his bizarre family. After the hitchhiker slashes Franklin’s arm and is forcibly ejected from their van, the group presses onward, desperate to find fuel and safety.Running low on gasoline, they stop at an abandoned homestead that Sally and Franklin remember from their youth. While Kirk and Pam wander off to explore a nearby swimming hole, Kirk discovers a decrepit, eerie farmhouse. Hoping to secure some fuel from the residents, Kirk enters the house uninvited. Instantly, his motivation to help his friends turns into a desperate struggle for survival when Leatherface—a towering, monstrous man wearing a macabre mask made of human skin—suddenly emerges and bludgeons Kirk to death with a sledgehammer.Unaware of the slaughter, Pam follows shortly after and stumbles into a horrifying room grotesquely decorated with human bones, feathers, and furniture made from body parts. Leatherface captures Pam and impales her on a meat hook, leaving her to helplessly watch as he processes Kirk's body. As daylight fades, the remaining friends grow increasingly panicked by the disappearances. Jerry sets out to search for Kirk and Pam, eventually finding the horrifying
slaughterhouse-like farmhouse. He discovers Pam alive, trapped inside a freezer, before Leatherface brutally murders him as well.Realizing they are hunted, Pam and Franklin are gone, leaving Sally as the final target. Sally flees into the pitch-black night, relentlessly pursued by Leatherface wielding his roaring chainsaw. She bursts into a local gas station, pleading for help from the proprietor, but the deranged gas station owner is actually a member of the cannibalistic family. He captures Sally,
bound and gagged, and throws her into the back of his truck, transporting her back to the horrifying farmhouse. There, Sally is subjected to unimaginable psychological and physical torture at a macabre family dinner table. The clan includes Leatherface, the gas station owner, an ancient, desiccated grandfather, and the hitchhiker, who turns out to be Leatherface's brother. They force the frail grandfather to attempt to bludgeon Sally to death. Amidst the chaos, Sally manages to break free, leaping through a second-story glass window into the night. She escapes down the highway, finally flagging down a passing truck, and collapses into the bed of a speeding pickup, leaving her crazed tormentors behind while Leatherface swings his chainsaw in furious, defeated rage.
