Set in San Francisco, the film centers on Johnny, a successful, well-liked banker living in a comfortable townhouse with his fiancée of seven years, deceptive beauty, Lisa. Despite Johnny’s unwavering devotion, financial support, and efforts to please her, Lisa has grown inexplicably bored and resentful of him. Prompted by her manipulative mother, Claudette, who warns that Johnny won't provide forever, Lisa begins an affair with Johnny’s best friend, a brooding banker named Mark.Throughout the narrative, this central betrayal ripples through a loose-knit community of eccentric friends. Johnny’s surrogate son-figure, a troubled college student named Denny, struggles with heavy drug debts to a dangerous neighborhood drug dealer. Johnny repeatedly rescues Denny, acting as a compassionate mentor and dispensing unsolicited life advice. Meanwhile, other acquaintances—including their bubbly neighbor Claudette, her perpetually distracted husband Steven, and their quirky friend Peter—drift in and out of scenes that frequently pivot away from the main plot into bizarre, disconnected tangents like impromptu rooftop football games, tuxedoed party brawls about breast cancer, and sudden discussions of real estate. As the months pass, Johnny remains oblivious to the deceit, though Mark experiences intense psychological guilt. Mark struggles with his conscience, torn between his loyalty to Johnny and his physical attraction to Lisa. Lisa, meanwhile, becomes increasingly brazen, gaslighting Johnny and openly discussing her relationship with Mark with her mother. She even falsely claims that Johnny hit her, attempting to justify
her infidelity to their social circle. The boiling point arrives during Johnny’s surprise
birthday party. After a night of heavy drinking, Lisa publicly announces to the gathered guests that she and Mark are in love and intend to marry. Devastated, betrayed, and utterly heartbroken, Mark punches Johnny, leading to a physical brawl. Shattered by the betrayal of the two people he trusted most, Johnny retreats to his study in despair. Lisa's friends abandon her in disgust over her cruelty. Left completely alone with his anguish, Johnny confronts the reality of his ruined life. He retrieves a pistol from his desk drawer and commits suicide, collapsing onto the floor just as Lisa, Mark, and Denny break into the room. The film concludes with the surviving characters kneeling over Johnny’s lifeless body, utterly frozen in shock and grief as sirens wail in the distance.
