Set in Mississippi during the height of the American Civil War, Martha Farnsworth operates a secluded seminary for young women, maintaining strict order alongside the remaining teacher, Edwina. The daily routine of isolation and prayer is shattered when one of the young students, Amy, discovers a wounded Union Army corporal, John McBurney, hiding in the woods. Despite the household's initial fear and strong Confederate loyalties, they take the injured soldier in to nurse him back to health, intending to hand him over to the authorities once he recovers.As John heals under their care, the dynamic of the isolated household shifts dramatically.
