Five young, free-spirited travelers—Sally, her paraplegic brother Franklin, and their friends Kirk, Pam, and Jerry—cruise through the scorching Texas backcountry in a battered van. Their primary motivation is a blend of youthful adventure and a desire to check on Sally and Franklin’s grandfather’s grave, rumored to have been desecrated by local grave robbers.Along the way, they pick up a frantic, blood-stained hitchhiker whose erratic and deeply unsettling behavior culminates in him slashing his own hand and attacking Franklin before being forced out of the vehicle. Shaken by the encounter, the group presses on, stopping briefly at a dilapidated old gas station. The eerie, eccentric proprietor warns them away from the surrounding area, but the friends ignore his ominous advice and continue toward the old family homestead.Arriving at the decaying farmhouse, Sally and her friends decide to explore the property while waiting for gas money to materialize. Seeking a swimming hole nearby, Kirk and Pam stumble upon a neighboring, equally decrepit house. Hoping to find someone to buy fuel from, Kirk steps inside, unaware he has entered the domain of a depraved clan of former
slaughterhouse workers. Suddenly, a hulking, leather-masked brute known as Leatherface emerges from the shadows, bludgeoning Kirk to death with a heavy hammer and dragging him behind a sliding metal door.Unaware of her boyfriend's gruesome fate, Pam follows shortly after. She enters the house and stumbles into a literal chamber of horrors, a living space constructed entirely of human bones and decaying animal carcasses. Terror grips her as Leatherface captures her, impaling her on a meathook to slowly bleed to death while he tortures her trapped consciousness. As daylight fades, the remaining friends grow increasingly desperate. Jerry goes looking for Kirk and Pam, only to meet a similarly violent end at the hands of the chainsaw-wielding maniac. Franklin and Sally eventually venture out into the dark to find their missing companions. Pushing Franklin’s wheelchair through the dense brush, they are ambushed; Leatherface brutally slaughters Franklin with a chainsaw before pursuing a terrified Sally.Fleeing for her life, Sally reaches the gas station, begging the proprietor for help. However, her sanctuary is an illusion. The gas station owner reveals himself to be an accomplice to the murderous clan, capturing Sally and binding her. He loads her into a pickup truck alongside the rotting corpse of her grandfather and drives her back to the slaughterhouse for a horrific family dinner.Bound to a chair, Sally is tormented by the sadistic clan, including a withered, ancient patriarch who attempts to have her killed with a hammer. In a frenzy of adrenaline and pure
survival instinct, Sally manages to break free. She leaps through a glass window, pursued relentlessly by Leatherface through the dark, moonlit woods. Stumbling onto a desolate highway, she flags down a passing semi-truck and leaps into the truck bed, narrowly escaping her tormentors as the deranged, chainsaw-wielding killer swings wildly at the retreating vehicle in a dance of furious, impotent rage.
