In the year 2022, New York City is a dystopian nightmare defined by overpopulation, extreme poverty, and the total collapse of the climate. Natural food sources have vanished, leaving the starving masses reliant on processed rations provided by the monolithic Soylent Corporation. Detective Frank Thorn, a weary investigator, lives in a cramped apartment with his elderly friend, Sol Roth, a man who remembers the world as it once was. When a wealthy Soylent executive named William Simonson is brutally murdered in his high-security apartment, Thorn is assigned to the case. Despite pressure from superiors to close
the investigation quickly, Thorn suspects a
political assassination rather than a simple robbery. As Thorn delves deeper, he discovers that Simonson was deeply troubled by a secret he kept for the Soylent board of directors. Following a trail of clues, Thorn realizes that the food supply is not derived from plankton as the company claims. Meanwhile, Sol visits a secret government research facility, where he accesses ancient records that confirm the horrific truth: the oceans are dead, and the food supply is no longer plant-based. Overwhelmed by the realization that humanity has become a cannibalistic species, Sol chooses to end his life through a state-sanctioned euthanasia program.Thorn tracks Sol to the facility, witnessing the final moments of his friend’s life. Driven by a desperate need to expose the truth, he hides inside the disposal center, where he watches in horror as the bodies of the deceased are processed into the very wafers consumed by the public. Armed with this devastating knowledge, Thorn attempts to escape the facility but is cornered and stabbed by a corrupt police captain who was in on the conspiracy. As he is carried away on a stretcher, Thorn screams to the gathered crowd, desperately trying to reveal the grim reality of their existence. The film concludes with his frantic, echoing warning: "Soylent Green is people!" The ending leaves the audience to grapple with the terrifying implications of a society that has quite literally consumed its own future to survive in a dying, resource-depleted world.
