In the quiet, suburban town of Woodsboro, the peace is shattered when high school student Casey Becker is brutally murdered by a masked figure known as Ghostface. This horrific act serves as the catalyst for a reign of terror that targets Sidney Prescott, whose own mother was raped and murdered exactly one year prior. As the body count rises, Sidney finds herself trapped in a living nightmare, unable to trust anyone in her immediate social circle. Her boyfriend, Billy Loomis, becomes the primary suspect, especially after he is discovered with a cell phone near the scene of an attack, though his subsequent release leaves the town in a state of paralyzing paranoia. The narrative unfolds with meta-commentary, as the characters—all avid fans of horror cinema—constantly reference the "rules" of slasher films to survive. Tatum Riley, Sidney’s best friend, falls victim to the killer during a house party, while ambitious local reporter Gale Weathers relentlessly pursues the story, hoping to salvage her tarnished reputation. The tension escalates as the killer plays a cat-and-mouse game, utilizing voice-altering technology to taunt Sidney about her past and her mother’s scandalous secrets. The climax erupts at a secluded house party where the true nature of the violence is revealed. It is discovered that Billy Loomis and his accomplice, Stu Macher, are the architects of the carnage. Their motivation is rooted in a twisted obsession with horror movies and a desire for revenge against Sidney’s mother, who had an affair with Billy’s father, leading to the disintegration of his family. The final showdown is a desperate, bloody struggle for survival within the walls of the house. Sidney, drawing on her inner strength and the very tropes used against her, manages to outsmart the duo. She effectively weaponizes the horror genre’s conventions, turning the tables on her tormentors. In a final, visceral confrontation, Sidney eliminates both Billy and Stu, finally bringing an end to the night of terror. As the sun rises, the survivors are left to grapple with the trauma, knowing that while the killers are gone, the psychological scars of the Woodsboro massacre will haunt them forever.
