Ben Mears, a disillusioned and
successful author seeking creative inspiration and closure from childhood trauma, returns to his eerie hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot, Maine. He rents the infamous, foreboding Marsten House, a decaying mansion looming ominously over the town. Ben quickly discovers that the property has been purchased by the enigmatic European antique dealer Richard Straker and his perpetually absent silent partner, Mr. Barlow.Ben forms a passionate romantic connection with local schoolteacher Susan Norton and develops a deep friendship with inquisitive high schooler Mark Petrie and local high school English teacher Matt Burke. Simultaneously, a dark, suffocating shadow falls across the isolated rural community. Local children begin disappearing, and adults succumb to a mysterious, wasting anemia.Ben soon realizes the grim truth: Barlow is actually an ancient vampire, and Straker is his ruthless human familiar. The town is systematically being converted into an undead colony. Driven by a desperate need to protect the innocent lives of Jerusalem's Lot, Ben, Susan, Matt, and the wise local doctor Jimmy Cody forge a dangerous pact to eradicate the nocturnal infestation before the entire population is damned.Tragedy strikes when Susan sneaks into the Marsten House alone to confront the threat, gets captured by Straker, and is subsequently transformed into a creature of the night. Devastated, Ben is forced to stake his beloved Susan to release her soul. Meanwhile, Matt and Dr. Cody fall victim to the escalating supernatural onslaught inside the town's boarding house.Left with almost no allies, Ben and young Mark Petrie press forward, fueled by fierce determination and sheer
survival instinct. They infiltrate the gloomy basement of the Marsten House during daylight hours, discovering the resting coffins of the master vampire and his thralls. In a tense, heart-pounding climax, Ben drives a wooden stake through the heart of the sleeping Mr. Barlow, destroying the ancient evil and fracturing the hive mind controlling the remaining ghouls. With the master vanquished, the surviving thralls scatter in disarray, and the remaining townsfolk flee the tainted settlement. Ben and Mark escape the cursed valley behind them, leaving the ominous hollow of Jerusalem's Lot behind. However, their victory is bittersweet. Knowing that stray vampires may still lurk in the surrounding woods, Ben and Mark vow to never truly rest until every last monster is destroyed. Months later, deep in the wilderness, they inadvertently spark a massive forest fire, desperately hoping the roaring inferno will finally consume the haunted town and cleanse the earth of the dark, lingering evil that once consumed it.
