Kundan Shankar, a simple boy from Varanasi, falls obsessively in love with Zoya Haider, a spirited Muslim girl, during his childhood. Despite the cultural and religious divide, Kundan spends years pursuing her, even resorting to self-harm to gain her attention. Zoya, however, remains indifferent and eventually leaves for Delhi to pursue higher education, leaving Kundan heartbroken but hopeful.Years later, Zoya returns to Varanasi, now a sophisticated university student with a modern worldview. Kundan, still infatuated, attempts to rekindle their bond, only to learn that Zoya has fallen in love with Akram Zaidi, a student leader at her Delhi college. Desperate and blinded by jealousy, Kundan sabotages their impending marriage by falsely accusing Akram of being a local boy, leading to a violent confrontation where Akram is killed by a mob. When Zoya discovers that Kundan’s deceit directly caused Akram's death, her grief turns into a cold, calculated desire for vengeance. She manipulates Kundan’s guilt, convincing him to enter politics and become a
public figure, only to systematically destroy his reputation and life from within. Kundan, consumed by remorse and still harboring a twisted devotion to Zoya, willingly accepts his downfall, viewing his suffering as a form of penance for his past sins.As the narrative unfolds, the film explores the destructive nature of obsession and the blurred lines between love and selfishness. Zoya eventually realizes that her quest for revenge has turned her into the very monster she despised, while Kundan finds a grim sense of peace in his ultimate sacrifice. The climax sees Kundan orchestrating a final, public act of atonement that leaves the city of Varanasi and Zoya forever changed. He dies in a
political protest he initiated, proving that his love, however toxic and misguided, was the singular driving force of his existence. The story concludes as a haunting meditation on how unrequited passion, when left unchecked, can spiral into a tragedy that consumes everyone involved, leaving behind only the echoes of a broken heart in the narrow, winding alleys of their ancient, indifferent city.
