Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire

Set in 1987 Harlem, the film follows Claireece "Precious" Jones, an illiterate, sixteen-year-old Black teenager bearing an unimaginable burden. Pregnant for a second time by her abusive, absent father, and routinely subjected to brutal physical and psychological torment by her cruel, codependent mother Mary, Precious navigates a daily existence defined by isolation, shame, and despair. Expelled from her high school due to her pregnancy, Precious is offered a lifeline by her principal, who enrolls her in an alternative school called Each One Teach One.Led by the compassionate, fiercely intelligent teacher Miss Rain, this alternative classroom introduces Precious to a world where she is finally seen, heard, and valued. Surrounded by a small, diverse group of fellow marginalized classmates, Precious begins to trust others for the first time. Miss Rain immediately recognizes Precious's struggles with literacy and dedicates herself to teaching Precious how to read and write. Through journaling, Precious discovers a profound internal voice, transforming her painful reality into vivid, imaginative daydreams of Hollywood glamour and celebrity adoration that serve as her escape from abuse.Dramatic tension peaks when Precious gives birth to her second child, a son named Abdul, who has Down syndrome.
