Louis Creed, a dedicated physician, relocates his wife Rachel, young daughter Ellie, and toddler son Gage to a rural Maine home adjacent to a bustling highway. Seeking a peaceful life, Louis is immediately unsettled by the grim reality of their new neighborhood: a crude trail worn by local children leads deep into the woods to the "Pet Sematary," a crude burial ground for beloved family pets.Shortly after arriving, Louis meets their quirky, elderly neighbor, Jud Crandall. Jud takes the family under his wing, warning them of the dangers posed by the massive semi-trucks thundering down the road. Tragedy strikes early when Ellie’s beloved cat, Church, is struck and killed by a truck. Wishing to spare the heartbroken girl the agony of loss, Jud leads Louis beyond the Pet Sematary, past an ancient Micmac
Indian burial ground, to an elevated plot of land. Jud instructs Louis to bury the cat there, keeping the true nature of the site a secret. The next day, Church returns. However, the feline is profoundly altered: he moves with eerie, predatory grace, emits a foul stench, and displays a terrifying, aggressive malice. Louis is deeply disturbed by the resurrection, realizing the ground holds a dark, corrupting power that brings back the dead as twisted versions of their former selves.Despite this horrific lesson, fate deals an even crueler blow when little Gage wanders into the path of a speeding truck and is killed. Grief-stricken and driven mad by unbearable sorrow, Louis ignores Jud's desperate warnings and the eerie omens plaguing his home. Ignoring the natural laws of life and death, Louis exhumes Gage’s tiny body and carries it back to the accursed Indian burial ground, hoping to undo the tragedy.Gage returns, but the resurrection unleashes pure evil. The toddler is possessed by a malevolent entity, transforming into a cunning, demonic killer armed with a scalpel. Gage brutally slaughters Jud, then turns his murderous intent toward his own mother, Rachel, who has returned home to find her family unraveling.Louis arrives too late to stop the carnage. Heartbroken, terrified, and forced to face the monstrous reality of his actions, Louis uses a
lethal injection to end his son's cursed existence. As the house burns around him, a deranged Louis buries Rachel’s body in the same cursed soil, desperately believing a second chance will yield a better outcome. The film ends with a horrifying realization as a resurrected, undead Rachel returns to the charred home, greeting a shell-shocked Louis with cold, lifeless eyes before coldly reaching out to embrace him as the screen fades to black.
