Set against the vast, glittering backdrop of deep space, the luxury interstellar cruiser Avalon drifts silently toward a distant colony planet, carrying thousands of sleeping passengers in hibernation pods. Among them is Jim Preston, a rugged and unassuming mechanical engineer whose pod malfunctions due to a freak micrometeoroid collision, waking him up a staggering ninety years too early. Initially thrilled by the vast vessel and all its high-tech amenities, Jim soon confronts a crushing psychological reality: he is entirely alone, with no way back into hibernation, and destined to age and die aboard the ship before it ever reaches its destination. For over a year, Jim battles profound isolation, descending into a spiral of despair, heavy drinking, and suicidal ideation as he rattles around the cavernous ghost ship with only an anthropomorphic android bartender named Arthur for company. His bleak existence is shattered when he discovers the pod of Aurora Lane, a vibrant, ambitious New York journalist. Mesmerized by her beauty and intellect through her digital profile, Jim falls deeply into a desperate, one-sided obsession. He faces an agonizing ethical dilemma: should he condemn Aurora to the same lonely fate by waking her up, or let her sleep peacefully while he rots away in solitude?Weakened by temptation and loneliness, Jim ultimately pulls the trigger, manually overriding her pod. When Aurora awakens in sheer terror, believing the ship is failing, Jim plays the sympathetic fellow victim, concealing his monstrous act. Ignorant of the truth, Aurora clings to Jim for safety and comfort. As they navigate their bizarre reality, exploring the ship's opulent zero-gravity pool, luxury suites, and gourmet dining rooms, a genuine, passionate romance blossoms. They surrender to their undeniable chemistry, sharing intimate encounters and forging a deep emotional bond, seemingly finding paradise in the stars. However, the illusion shatters violently. Arthur, lacking human tact, inadvertently reveals Jim’s secret to Aurora. Devastated, betrayed, and physically nauseated by the revelation that her entire future was stolen by a selfish act of love, Aurora attacks Jim and banishes him from her life. Yet, their fragile domesticity is soon interrupted by a cascading series of catastrophic system failures. The Avalon’s reactor begins to overheat, threatening to incinerate the ship and every sleeping soul on board. Forced to work together, Jim and Aurora must put aside their bitter resentment to save the vessel. During a perilous spacewalk, Jim sacrifices his own safety to vent the reactor, seemingly plunging into the void of space to his death.Grief-stricken, Aurora manages to use an automated medical pod—which doubles as a revival unit—to resuscitate Jim, though not without severe risk. In the aftermath, Aurora realizes the true depth of Jim's remorse and the reality of their unbreakable bond. Rather than returning to her solitary pod, she chooses to remain awake, embracing a shared lifetime of love, adventure, and isolation with Jim aboard their metallic home among the stars.
