In the mountains of South Korea, young Mija lives an idyllic life raising Okja, a genetically modified "super pig" created by the ruthless multinational conglomerate, the Mirando Corporation. Lucy Mirando, the company’s image-obsessed CEO, launched a global PR campaign ten years prior, distributing twenty-six baby super pigs to farmers worldwide to create an ethical, sustainable meat product. Okja grows up not as livestock, but as Mija’s beloved best friend, constant companion, and family.Their peaceful existence shatters when Mirando representatives, led by the eccentric television zoologist Dr. Johnny Wilcox, arrive to reclaim Okja. Despite Mija’s desperate protests,
the corporation ships the massive animal to New York City to serve as the centerpiece for Lucy’s grand corporate rebranding. Heartbroken and fiercely determined, Mija embarks on a perilous rescue mission, leaving her mountain home for the chaotic urban jungle of America. In Seoul, Mija’s pursuit unexpectedly intersects with the
Animal Liberation Front (ALF), a radical activist group led by the idealistic Silver. Driven by a strict moral code of non-violence, the ALF intercepts Okja's transport truck. Recognizing an opportunity to expose Mirando’s cruel practices to the world, Silver and his multilingual crew translate for Mija, enlisting her help. They plant a recording device inside Okja’s ear and reluctantly release the creature back to the corporation, intending to infiltrate the New Jersey laboratory and expose the systemic animal abuse occurring behind closed doors. The plan succeeds initially, but things take a sinister turn when Dr. Johnny Wilcox brutally tortures Okja in a subterranean testing facility to gather marketing data. When the ALF breaches the lab, they rescue both Okja and Mija, but K, an ALF member who mistranslated Mija’s warnings out of ideological zeal, is beaten and arrested. Betrayed and furious, Silver expels K from the group. Meanwhile, Lucy Mirando, facing plummeting stock prices and internal mutiny from her ruthless twin sister Nancy—who seizes control of the company—orders Okja sent directly to a high-volume slaughterhouse in New Jersey.Mija infiltrates the nightmarish slaughterhouse just as Okja is driven toward the execution line. Unable to buy Okja’s life with corporate funds, Mija offers Nancy Mirando a valuable golden pig her grandfather gave her in exchange for the animal. Nancy accepts the trade. As Mija and Okja finally escape the horrors of the facility, they witness thousands of other super pigs marching toward a grim fate. Amidst the chaos of the slaughterhouse, a desperate mother pig covertly passes her newborn piglet through the fence to Okja, who hides it safely in her mouth. Mija, Okja, and the newborn piglet finally return safely to their peaceful mountain home, forever changed by the cruelties of the outside world.
