At Coolidge College, Van Wilder is a legendary undergraduate who has purposely prolonged his stay for seven years by constantly changing his major. Beloved by the student body, Van channels his immense popularity into organizing outrageous parties and running a charity foundation. However, his carefree existence is threatened when his exasperated father, waiting for his son to finally graduate and enter the real world, decides to cut off his tuition funding completely.Forced to find a way to pay for his final semester, Van reluctantly goes into business as a professional
party planner, utilizing his immense social capital to generate cash. Meanwhile, Gwen Pearson, an ambitious and cynical reporter for the campus newspaper, is assigned to write a hit piece profiling Van. Initially disgusted by his hedonistic lifestyle, Gwen spends time shadowing him and slowly realizes that beneath his slacker persona lies a deeply empathetic man who uses his charm to boost the confidence of outcasts, nerds, and struggling students.Complicating matters is Richard Bagg, Gwen’s arrogant, pre-med boyfriend and the president of a rival fraternity. Threatened by Van’s enduring campus influence and jealous of the growing bond between Van and Gwen, Richard orchestrates a series of cruel schemes to humiliate Van and sabotage his efforts to finally graduate. Richard’s ultimate plan involves framing Van for academic dishonesty and orchestrating financial ruin, hoping to get him expelled once and for all.Things reach a boiling point when Richard arranges for the school to impound the party funds and tricks Gwen into believing Van is just using her. Heartbroken, Gwen distances herself, while Van faces the imminent loss of his degree and his legacy. Rallying together, the grateful students and faculty members whom Van has helped over the years decide to return the favor. They organize a massive, underground fundraising campaign and gather the necessary tuition money, while also uncovering Richard's malicious plot against Van.On the day of the final exams, Richard attempts to block Van from entering the testing hall, but the campus community unites to thwart Richard's interference. Van successfully takes his final exam, passes, and finally graduates. In
the aftermath, Gwen realizes Richard's true colors, dumps him, and reconciles with Van. With his undergraduate days officially behind him, Van passes his legendary party-planning mantle to a deserving freshman, ready to start a new chapter of his life alongside Gwen, having left an indelible mark on Coolidge College.
