Set against the backdrop of 1970 Baltimore, *Multiple Maniacs* follows the exploits of the charismatic and sociopathic ringleader, Lady Divine, and her bizarre carnivalesque troupe of degenerates, known as "Cavalcade of Perversion." Operating out of a traveling, deeply offensive sideshow, Divine scams and terrorizes naive townspeople by presenting grotesque and shocking "freak" acts, such as eating stolen jewelry or watching people eat vomit. However, behind the bizarre spectacle, the carnival is actually a front for a ruthless gang of criminals who rob their patrons blind after luring them into the tent with the promise of taboo entertainment. As the story progresses, Divine’s grip on sanity and power begins to fracture. Her primary motivation is a twisted sense of superiority and absolute control, fueled by an insatiable greed and a deep-seated hatred for conventional societal norms. Chaos ensues when Divine discovers that her lover and
business partner, David, is cheating on her with a member of the troupe named Mink. Blinded by jealousy and rage, Divine spirals into a murderous frenzy, executing a series of grotesque betrayals and killings. She brutally murders David in a fit of passionate fury and even goes so far as to cannibalize his heart, completely unhinged by the betrayal.Left alone to command her crumbling empire, Divine descends further into madness. She begins hallucinating and experiencing surreal, religious-themed delusions, convinced she is an incarnation of
the Virgin Mary, despite her ongoing violent impulses. The climax of her breakdown occurs in a public park, where her increasingly erratic and offensive behavior finally catches up with her. In a shocking, surreal sequence, Divine is violently attacked and seemingly devoured by a giant, man-eating lobster, ending her reign of terror in absurdly grotesque fashion. Yet, the film's chaotic energy persists even past her demise. In the bizarre aftermath of the lobster attack, Divine miraculously reappears, though her mind is now completely shattered beyond repair. She stumbles dazed and bloodied through the streets of Baltimore, completely unbothered by the carnage she has left in her wake. The police are quickly alerted to the ongoing madness, and as law enforcement swarms the area, Divine goes on one final, mindless rampage. She shoots indiscriminately at the approaching officers, embodying pure, unadulterated anarchy until the very end. She is ultimately gunned down by the authorities in a hail of bullets, collapsing on the pavement as the chaotic legacy of the Cavalcade of Perversion is violently brought to a definitive, bloody close, leaving the city forever scarred by her bizarre and terrifying existence.
