Set against the sun-bleached, cynical backdrop of late-1960s Los Angeles, *Model Shop* follows George Matthews, an aimless and disillusioned young architect drifting through life. George is paralyzed by a sense of impending doom: he is unemployed, deeply in debt, facing an imminent draft notice for the Vietnam War, and his marriage to his
aspiring actress wife, Gloria, is rapidly disintegrating. Gloria has grown increasingly cold and ambitious, threatening a divorce because George lacks financial security and drive. Desperate for money to pay his rent and avoid his military obligations, George borrows a car from a friend and spends a day aimlessly driving through the sprawling, hypnotic streets of the city, attempting to outrun his mounting anxieties.During his drive, George becomes captivated by a stunning, melancholic French woman he briefly sees on the boulevard. Intrigued, he follows her to her workplace: a discreet establishment known as a model shop, where clients pay to photograph young women in various states of undress. George pays the fee to enter, discovering that the enigmatic woman calls herself Lola. Unlike the other transactional models, Lola is aloof, world-weary, and unimpressed by the usual clientele. George strikes up a hesitant conversation with her, and a fragile, poignant connection forms between the two drifting souls over the course of a single afternoon. As they talk, Lola reveals that she is stranded in Los Angeles, waiting for money from her estranged husband, filmmaker Jacques Demy, while trying to scrape together enough cash for a plane ticket back to Paris. She embodies the romantic disillusionment that mirrors George’s own
existential crisis. They leave the shop together and spend the rest of the day and night wandering the atmospheric, neon-lit alleys of Los Angeles, sharing intimate confessions, fleeting passions, and a mutual desire to escape the suffocating realities of their respective lives. For George, Lola represents a desperate romantic anchor in a world that is quickly slipping out of his control.By morning, however, reality intrudes. Lola receives the long-awaited money from her husband and abruptly prepares to leave for the airport, knowing their encounter was merely a passing moment of grace. Concurrently, George returns home to find that Gloria has officially packed her things and left him for a wealthier man. With his apartment empty, his marriage officially over, and the draft board looming, George undergoes a sudden metamorphosis. Rather than succumbing to total despair, the brief, intense romance with Lola instills him with a renewed, albeit quiet, sense of agency. He calmly accepts his inevitable future, marches down to face the draft board, and steps forward into his uncertain tomorrow with a hardened yet strangely liberated spirit.
