David Cronenberg’s satirical drama *Maps to the Stars* unfolds as a venomous, hallucinatory exposé of Hollywood superficiality, driven by the intersecting lives of the severely dysfunctional Weiss family and those orbiting their toxic galaxy. At the center is Agatha Weiss, a badly disfigured young pyromaniac recently released from a psychiatric facility in Florida. Haunted by a dark family history, she returns to Los Angeles and secures a job as the personal assistant to Havana Segard, a fading, deeply insecure actress obsessed with landing a role that once belonged to her deceased, legendary mother, Clarice. Havana’s desperate ambition is matched only by her psychological unraveling, plagued by visions of the ghost of Clarice, whom she simultaneously envies and reviles.Meanwhile, Agatha connects with her estranged brother, Benjie, a self-absorbed thirteen-year-old child star and newly rehabilitated addict. Despite his massive fame, Benjie is hollowed out by industry pressures and a profound lack of empathy, a trait seemingly bred into him by his parents. Behind the scenes, their father, Dr. Stafford Weiss, is a wildly successful celebrity therapist and self-help guru whose glossy exterior masks a deeply corrupt and incestuous soul. Stafford hypocritically preaches mental wellness while expertly manipulating his wealthy clients, including Havana, whom he treats for her myriad neuroses while secretly engaging in an exploitative sexual relationship with her.As the narrative progresses, long-buried secrets begin to detonate with Greek-tragedy force. It is revealed that Agatha and Benjie are actually the product of an incestuous relationship between Stafford and Clarice, a devastating truth that Stafford and his emotionally detached wife, Christina, tried to erase by committing Agatha.Agatha’s presence in Los Angeles acts as a catalyst for ultimate destruction. After beginning a tentative, tragic romance with Jerome, a limo driver and aspiring screenwriter who also works for Havana, Agatha becomes increasingly unhinged. Havana, meanwhile, fires Agatha in a fit of narcissistic rage, unaware that the assistant holds the ultimate psychological upper hand. In a gruesome turn of events, a crazed fan attacks Havana, and shortly after, Havana’s dream role is snatched away, driving her to a final, tragic breaking point. The climax culminates in ultimate carnage for the Weiss dynasty. Benjie, having suffered a total psychological relapse and tormented by the ghosts of children he wronged, attacks Agatha before being fatally bludgeoned by his own sister. Left entirely alone, Agatha finally embraces her tragic lineage, consuming poisoned pills in a ritualistic suicide alongside the corpse of her brother, leaving Hollywood’s shallow empire to continue spinning undisturbed over their graves.
