Set in a lush, hilly region of Kerala, *Malayankunju* follows Anikuttan, a grumpy and deeply prejudiced electronics repairman whose life is defined by bitter isolation. Haunted by a painful past involving his runaway father and the suicide of his sister, Anikuttan channels his unresolved trauma into bigotry, particularly harboring a profound hatred for his neighbors, a family belonging to a lower caste. He spends his days obsessively dismantling gadgets and listening to the sounds of his neighbors' lives through a baby monitor he illicitly taps into, driven by a toxic mix of
surveillance and malice. His elderly mother remains the only person he tolerates, though he treats her with cold indifference. The narrative's central conflict escalates when a young, cheerful couple moves into the neighboring house along with their newborn baby girl. Despite his relentless attempts to ignore them, the baby's innocent cries pierce through Anikuttan’s carefully constructed emotional armor. Meanwhile, torrential monsoon rains batter the region, threatening the stability of the steep hillsides. As the downpour intensifies, turning the red soil into a treacherous trap, Anikuttan’s inner world begins to fracture under the weight of his own growing guilt and the escalating physical danger outside. One fateful night, a massive landslide devastates
the neighborhood, burying homes in tons of mud and debris. Anikuttan’s house is partially destroyed, and he finds himself trapped in a dark, suffocating cavern beneath the wreckage, injured and utterly helpless. In this claustrophobic nightmare, stripped of his tools, his prejudices, and his modern gadgets, he is forced to confront the absolute fragility of human existence.Amidst the pitch-black terror, he hears the faint, desperate cry of the newborn baby buried alive nearby. This sound acts as a catalyst for his complete redemption. Motivated by an overwhelming, sudden surge of empathy and a desperate need for redemption, Anikuttan abandons his past hatreds. Using his bare hands, driven by sheer adrenaline and raw will, he begins to claw through the heavy, suffocating mud in the dark. The grueling physical struggle becomes a spiritual purgation. Through agonizing effort, he manages to rescue the infant, bringing her out into the safety of dawn. As the morning light breaks over the devastated landscape, Anikuttan holds the baby, physically battered and scarred, but finally healed of the spiritual darkness that had consumed his soul for years.
