The Primm family relocates to a dilapidated brownstone in New York City, seeking a fresh start. Young Josh struggles to adapt to his new school, feeling isolated and overwhelmed by the city's frantic pace. However, the family's anxieties shatter when Josh discovers a fully grown, tuxedo-wearing, singing crocodile named Lyle living in the attic. Initially terrified, Josh soon learns that Lyle is a gentle, charismatic, and harmless creature who communicates entirely through song rather than speech. Lyle was originally discovered as a baby by Hector P. Valenti, a down-on-his-luck theatrical showman who trained the reptile for a musical act. Unfortunately, stage fright paralyzed Lyle during his debut performance, leading to Valenti's financial ruin and eventual abandonment of the apartment, leaving Lyle behind to fend for himself.Mr. and Mrs. Primm quickly overcome their initial shock, charmed by Lyle’s endearing personality, culinary skills, and affection for Josh. Lyle becomes the catalyst for the family's rejuvenation; Mrs. Primm rediscovers her passion for gourmet cooking, and Josh gains the confidence he desperately needed. However, domestic bliss is disrupted by Mr. Grumps, their hyper-vigilant, perpetually disgruntled downstairs neighbor, who despises noise and vows to rid the building of the illegal animal. When Hector P. Valenti unexpectedly returns to New York, desperate to settle old debts and revive his failing career, he convinces Lyle and the Primms that a high-profile televised talent show is the ultimate ticket to financial security and social acceptance. Despite misgivings, the group prepares for the massive public audition. On the night of the live broadcast, Hector pushes Lyle onto the massive stage. Confronted by the glaring studio lights and the roaring crowd, Lyle’s old trauma resurres, causing him to freeze and utterly fail to sing a single note.Seizing the vulnerability, the ruthless network executives and an envious Mr. Grumps conspire to have Lyle seized by the municipal animal control authorities. Lyle is hauled away to a grim, high-security municipal zoo, prompting Josh, his parents, and a remorseful Hector to hatch a daring, late-night rescue mission. Navigating security fences and overcoming bureaucratic red tape, the motley crew breaks into the facility. Just as authorities close in, Josh encourages Lyle to conquer his fear by singing for his loved ones rather than an intimidating audience. Finding his voice, Lyle delivers a triumphant, roof-raising musical performance that captivates the public, wins over the courtroom judge, and exposes the corruption of the city officials, ultimately securing his legal freedom and cementing his place as a beloved member of the Primm family.
