In 1970, Larry "Doc" Sportello, a perpetually stoned private investigator living in Gordita Beach, California, is visited by his ex-girlfriend, Shasta Fay Hepworth. She warns Doc about a plot involving her new lover, billionaire real estate mogul Mickey Wolfmann, whom his wife and her boyfriend intend to kidnap and commit to an asylum. Shortly after, both Shasta and Wolfmann vanish without a trace. As Doc delves into the mystery, he encounters a labyrinthine web of conspiracies involving the Golden Fang, a shadowy syndicate that may be a drug-trafficking cartel, a tax haven, or perhaps a front for something more sinister.Doc’s investigation is constantly hindered and helped by Christian F. "Bigfoot" Bjornsen, an LAPD detective with a volatile personality and a secret penchant for acting. Their relationship is defined by a bizarre, antagonistic symbiosis. As Doc navigates the psychedelic landscape of late-sixties counterculture, he crosses paths with a colorful cast of characters, including a former Aryan Brotherhood member turned police informant, a musician who supposedly died in a plane crash, and a conspiracy-obsessed saxophone player. Each lead draws Doc deeper into an underworld where the lines between the law, the criminal element, and the corporate elite blur into insignificance. The narrative mirrors the hazy, paranoid malaise of the era, reflecting the death of the hippie dream under the weight of Nixon-era paranoia and systemic corruption. Doc struggles to make sense of the conflicting testimonies and fragmented clues, often finding himself caught between government agencies, violent syndicates, and his own chemically altered perception of reality. Despite the chaos, his primary motivation remains a lingering, melancholic attachment to Shasta. As the threads of the Golden Fang begin to unravel, Doc realizes that the truth is rarely a singular revelation but rather a series of shifting illusions. The film concludes not with a tidy resolution, but with a lingering sense of ambiguity, leaving Doc to drift through a changing world that has left his ideals behind. He remains a relic of an era fading into the fog, forever searching for a clarity that the dark, interconnected machinery of Los Angeles refuses to provide.
