The narrative begins with the hedonistic Larry Cotton and his adulterous wife, Julia, moving into a dilapidated, gloomy suburban Victorian house. Larry is oblivious to the dark history lingering within the walls, but Julia is haunted by memories of her passionate, illicit affair with Larry’s ruthless and manipulative brother, Frank, which had occurred just prior to the move.Frank, driven by an insatiable desire for the ultimate sensory experiences, had previously acquired an enigmatic, ornate puzzle box known as the Lament Configuration. Unbeknownst to the family, manipulating the intricate artifact opens a portal to another dimension, summoning the Cenobites—deformed, trans-dimensional beings who perceive no distinction between extreme pain and extreme pleasure. Upon solving the puzzle, Frank was brutally flayed and torn apart by hooked chains, leaving his ruined body hidden beneath the floorboards of the upstairs attic.Fate intervenes when Larry accidentally injures his hand, spilling fresh blood onto the attic floorboards. The latent energy of
the sacrifice resurrects Frank, though he returns not as a whole man, but as a grotesque, skinless skeleton requiring a steady supply of fresh human blood to regenerate his physical form.Larry’s perceptive
teenage daughter from a previous marriage, Kirsty, soon discovers the unsettling truth about the house and her stepmother's treacherous loyalty to Frank. Driven by lust and guilt, Julia begins brutally murdering local drifters and acquaintances, luring them to the attic to harvest their blood so Frank can rebuild his body and resume their toxic romance. Kirsty stumbles upon the horrific carnage, steals the Lament Configuration in a desperate bid for escape, and inadvertently solves it herself, summoning the terrifying leader of the Cenobites, Pinhead. To save her own soul, Kirsty negotiates a dangerous bargain with the otherworldly entities: she promises to deliver Frank, who has cheated their domain by escaping. A tense, bloody confrontation ensues as Frank attempts to harvest Kirsty's blood instead. When Julia discovers Frank's betrayal of her affections, she turns on him, but Frank murders her, absorbing her life force. As the Cenobites arrive to claim their due, Frank tries to escape their inescapable hooks, but he is ultimately sliced into bloody pieces. Kirsty uses the puzzle box to reverse the ritual, banishing the Cenobites back to their realm. Walking away from the smoldering ruins of the house, Kirsty tries to destroy the box forever, but a shadowy drifter takes it away, proving the cycle of temptation and eternal torment is far from over.
