In the neon-drenched sprawl of Manhattan, paranormal investigator Peter Vankirk and his brilliant colleague Ray Stantz find themselves suddenly stripped of their academic funding. Refusing to let bureaucracy extinguish their life's work, the ambitious duo takes a massive financial gamble, converting a dilapidated former firehouse into the headquarters of a private supernatural elimination agency. They soon recruit the eccentric Egon Spengler, whose ingenious inventions include unlicensed nuclear particle accelerators strapped to their backs, designed to trap and contain restless spirits haunting the metropolis.Business initially crawls until they score their first major client at a luxurious, sultry penthouse hotel: Dana Barrett, a striking classical cellor whose apartment is ground zero for a demonic entity calling itself Zuul. When Peter visits Dana for a consultation, his professional detachment instantly dissolves into intense romantic fixation, driven by her alluring vulnerability and the bizarre, glowing possession episodes she begins to endure. Egon realizes that Dana and her awkward neighbor, Louis, have been marked as human gateways for Gozer the Gozerian, an ancient, malevolent deity plotting dimensional annihilation.Tensions escalate dramatically when an aggressive Environmental Protection Agency inspector named Walter Peck forcefully shuts down their containment unit, triggering a massive supernatural explosion that floods the streets of New York with captured specters. Desperate to save the city and prove their worth, the trio—now joined by the streetwise newcomer Winston Zeddemore—gear up for a suicide mission. They storm Dana’s heavily guarded apartment building, where they find Dana and Louis bound in stone-like trances, serving as altars for the awakening god.Upon reaching the rooftop, the team confronts Gozer, who offers them a terrifying ultimatum: choose the form of their destructor. Ray accidentally thinks of a cherished, innocent childhood mascot, inadvertently summoning a towering, hundred-foot-tall Marshmallow Man that begins stomping through the urban skyline in a chaotic display of sweet devastation. Refusing to yield, the quartet unites, crossing their high-powered proton streams and reversing the dimensional portal. The colossal entity is obliterated in a blinding flash of plasma, closing the rift just in time. The team rescues a breathless Dana from the rubble of the ruined altar.
