Set in 1913 Mexico during the dying days of the
Mexican Revolution, the narrative opens with the notorious outlaw Johnny Madrid escaping execution by the skin of his teeth. While fleeing from the relentless lawman Ezra Traynor, Madrid captures Esmeralda, a mysterious and beautiful young woman, intending to use her as a hostage. Unbeknownst to Madrid, Esmeralda is actually the daughter of Ambrose Bierce, a disillusioned American writer seeking his final adventure, and more importantly, she is the offspring of a human mother and the ancient vampire queen Quieto. Quieto rules a subterranean empire of bloodthirsty fiends from a notorious border watering hole, and she desires her daughter back to fulfill a dark,
ancient prophecy that will cement vampire supremacy over humanity.Madrid and his diverse crew of bandits—alongside a pious friar and a reluctant American couple, Ambrose and his companion Katherine—seek temporary refuge at the remote Santa Cecilia cantina. Seeking a safe haven, the weary travelers remain entirely unaware that the dusty tavern is actually a heavily fortified sanctuary for vampires. As night falls and the gates lock, the true, terrifying nature of the establishment reveals itself. The seductive barmaids and rugged patrons transform into ravenous monsters, trapping the living inside a horrifying nightmare.Inside the bloody chaos, loyalties are tested and unlikely alliances are forged. Ambrose Bierce confronts his past demons and fights valiantly to protect his long-lost daughter, ultimately sacrificing himself to ensure her survival. Meanwhile, Johnny Madrid steps up from a selfish outlaw to a fierce protector, fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with Esmeralda as the body count rises. Riding away into the sunrise, Madrid and Esmeralda part ways with the remnants of their old lives, forever changed by the horrifying, blood-soaked night that bridged two different worlds.
