Set in the rugged Oregon Territory during the 1820s, the story follows Otis "Cookie" Figowitz, a gentle, soft-spoken cook traveling with a rough group of fur trappers. Outcast and out of place in this harsh wilderness, Cookie’s life takes a turn when he encounters King-Lu, a charismatic
Chinese immigrant on the run from vengeful Russian hunters. After initially hiding Lu in the forest, Cookie shares his modest provisions, sparking an instant and deep bond rooted in shared loneliness and a mutual desire for a better life.Sometime later, Cookie and King-Lu reunite in a bustling frontier settlement. Dreaming of escaping their grueling, impoverished existence, they hatch a daring, albeit illicit, business venture. The local British factor, known simply as "Chief," has recently imported the territory’s very first dairy cow, a prized Milking Shorthorn, to elevate his status. Under the cover of darkness, Cookie and Lu sneak onto the Chief’s heavily guarded property. While Lu keeps watch, Cookie expertly milks the cow. Using this stolen, precious cream, Cookie bakes sweet, delectable oily cakes that immediately become a massive sensation among the rough-hewn trappers and locals, who happily trade hard-earned furs and money for a taste of home.Driven by a shared ambition to open a bakery in San Francisco, the partners enjoy a brief period of hope and prosperity. However, the Chief commissions Cookie to bake a clafoutis for an upcoming visit from a wealthy regional dignitary, demanding the very same special milk. During a covert nighttime milking attempt, the Chief discovers them in the act. Panic ensues, and the two friends are forced to flee into the unforgiving, dense wilderness separately, abandoning their dreams of wealth and leaving behind their hard-earned money. As they navigate the perilous, thickly forested terrain to escape the Chief's violent wrath, both men suffer from exhaustion and injuries. King-Lu manages to temporarily evade capture, while Cookie, weakened and desperate, collapses beneath the ferns. In the film’s poignant, quiet conclusion, many years later, an archaeological discovery unearths the skeletal remains of two humans lying closely together, side by side. It is a hauntingly tender testament to their
enduring friendship and their futile, beautiful attempt to carve out a civilized, gentle existence in a brutal and unforgiving world.
