In 1927 Paris, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald escapes custody while being transferred to Europe. Meanwhile, in London, Newt Scamander is barred from foreign travel by the British Ministry of Magic, who pressure him to track down Credence Barebone, a powerful Obscurial surviving in Paris. Althus Dumbledore also asks Newt to find Credence, refusing to confront Grindelwald himself due to a blood pact made in their youth.Newt travels to Paris illegally, aided by his magical beasts, and reunites with his American friends Tina and Queenie Goldstein, as well as Jacob Kowalski. Tina is searching for Credence to protect him, while Queenie has crossed the Atlantic illegally to be with Jacob, having bewitched him to accept marriage against his better judgment. Newt breaks the spell, causing a heartbroken Jacob to leave him and Tina to search for Queenie alone.Credence, meanwhile, is hiding in the Circus Arcanus alongside Nagini, a cursed woman transforming permanently into a snake. Credence seeks his true identity and birth parents. His search leads him and Nagini to the French Ministry of Magic, where they encounter Halfmaed Lestrange. They learn that Credence’s birth records are held within the secure archives.Concurrently, Newt and Tina infiltrate the French Ministry to access the same records. They are trapped in the Lestrange family tomb underground, where they are joined by Leta Lestrange and her former fiancé, Theseus Scamander, Newt's brother. They discover that Credence is supposedly Leta’s long-lost half-brother, supposedly switched at birth and lost at sea.Grindelwald hosts a massive rally in the Lestrange family mausoleum, drawing hundreds of followers, including a conflicted Queenie. Grindelwald preaches that Muggles are not evil, just different, and manipulates the crowd by forecasting the horrors of World War II. When French Aurors attempt to disrupt the gathering, Grindelwald unleashes blue magical fire. He challenges his followers to prove their loyalty by stepping through the flames; those whose loyalty he doubts are instantly incinerated, while true believers, including Queenie, safely cross over to join his crusade.Grindelwald casts a devastating blue dragon-fire spell meant to consume Paris. Newt, Theseus, Leta, Tina, Jacob, and Nagini combine their magical powers to neutralize the infernal flames. Before escaping, Leta sacrifices herself to save the brothers from Grindelwald. At Hogwarts, Newt presents Dumbledore with the shattered vial containing the blood pact, which he managed to snatch from Grindelwald during the battle, finally opening a path for Dumbledore to fight his former lover.
