In the dreary, isolated island town of Swallow Falls, the local economy relies entirely on sardines. Flint Lockwood, a socially awkward but brilliant inventor, dreams of creating something that will finally earn him the respect of his town and his stern, mono-browed father, Tim. After a series of failed contraptions, Flint builds the Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator (FLDSMDFR). When he accidentally launches the device into the stratosphere, it begins drawing moisture from the clouds to synthesize delicious meals that rain down upon the town.Initially, the townspeople are ecstatic. The sardine-weary locals transform their desolate home into a gourmet paradise, and the town is renamed Chewandswallow, becoming a global tourist attraction. Flint finds newfound fame and strikes up a romance with Sam Sparks, an aspiring weather intern sent to cover the phenomenon. However, the town’s gluttonous Mayor Shelbourne pushes Flint to produce increasingly complex meals, causing the machine to overheat and mutate.
