The narrative unfolds in real-time, beginning precisely at 5:00 PM on a Tuesday, while Cléo anxiously awaits the biopsy results of a medical examination that will determine if she has terminal cancer. Until 7:00 PM, Cléo must navigate the bustling streets of the city, wrestling with a profound existential dread that forces her to reevaluate her shallow, superficial existence. The film opens in a tarot reader’s parlor, where the cards hint at grave illness, sudden change, and death. Deeply superstitious and terrified of mortality, Cléo flees into the afternoon sunlight. She visits a chic hat boutique, indulging in her vanity, yet finds no comfort in material possessions or her beauty. Seeking solace, she returns to her luxurious apartment. There, she interacts with her pragmatic maid, Angèle, and her self-absorbed composer lover, Bob. Dismissed by Bob as a mere plaything rather than a grieving human being, Cléo experiences a moment of acute alienation.Feeling smothered by her pampered, dependent lifestyle, Cléo abruptly sheds her wig, discards her elaborate dress, and steps out onto the Parisian pavement incognito. This bold rejection of her manufactured persona marks a pivotal shift in her motivation: she is no longer hiding behind her fame and physical appeal. Instead, she seeks genuine human connection and a deeper understanding of the world around her.As she wanders through parks, cafés, and streets, Cléo observes the struggles of ordinary people, slowly shifting her perspective away from her own relentless introspection. She visits an artist friend, Dorothée, and watches the filming of a silent comedy short, which further grounds her in reality. The emotional climax of the film occurs in Parc Montsouris, where Cléo meets Antoine, a young, gentle soldier on military leave about to be shipped off to the Algerian War. Bonding over their shared anxieties about death and the unpredictable nature of time, Antoine accompanies Cléo to the hospital. When the doctor finally emerges with the test results at 7:00 PM, Cléo learns she has a severe illness requiring extensive treatment, yet she is no longer paralyzed by fear. Buoyed by Antoine’s steadfast presence and her newfound inner resilience, Cléo smiles, realizing that she possesses the strength to face whatever lies ahead.
