Thomas is a successful, narcissistic
fashion photographer living in the swinging London of the late 1960s. Bored with his superficial existence and the vapid models he captures, he wanders through a public park, aimlessly snapping candid shots of an older man and a young woman embracing in the grass. The woman, Jane, notices Thomas and pursues him, frantically demanding he surrender the film. When he refuses, she offers him money and eventually her body, leading to a detached, clinical
sexual encounter in his studio. Driven by a newfound obsession, Thomas develops the photographs, only to discover something unsettling. By enlarging the frames, he detects a blurred shape hiding in the bushes—a man aiming a handgun at the couple. As Thomas continues to "blow up" the images, the narrative shifts from a stylistic portrait of mod culture into a haunting existential mystery. He returns to the park under the cover of darkness and discovers a corpse lying in the grass, confirming his suspicions of a murder. However, when he brings his friend Ron to the scene, the body has vanished. Thomas’s reality begins to fray as he frantically searches for proof, but his negatives are stolen, and his studio is ransacked. The woman who seduced him has disappeared, leaving him isolated in a city that seems to offer no objective truth. The film reaches its climax at a chaotic rock concert and a subsequent drug-fueled party, where Thomas fails to find anyone who will believe his story. He eventually returns to the park, but the body is still missing. In the final, iconic sequence, Thomas encounters a group of mimes playing an imaginary tennis match. As he watches them, he begins to hear the faint, rhythmic sound of a ball being struck. He follows the invisible trajectory, physically engaging with the illusion. In this moment of surrender, Thomas accepts that the boundary between reality and perception is porous. He stands alone on the grass, his own image fading into the landscape, ultimately becoming just another ambiguous detail in a world where the truth is nothing more than a trick of the light.
