Set in Arizona in 1882, the narrative follows Albert Stark, a cowardly and mild-mannered sheep farmer whose life takes a drastic turn when his sharp-tongued girlfriend, Louise, dumps him for Foy, a wealthy and arrogant mustater. Heartbroken and humiliated, Albert resolves to leave
the treacherous frontier for the safety of San Francisco. However, his cowardly worldview is instantly challenged by the arrival of Anna, a tough, enigmatic newcomer to the rugged town. Unbeknownfully to Albert, Anna is actually the estranged wife of Clinch Leatherwood, a ruthless and feared outlaw currently operating in the region.Anna takes pity on Albert and agrees to help him win Louise back by making her fiercely jealous, pretending to be his new romantic interest. As they spend time together shooting at the local fair and sharing vulnerable moments, Albert’s confidence grows, and a genuine, profound romance blossoms between them. Simultaneously, Anna teaches Albert how to shoot a gun, helping him conquer the paralyzing fear that defined his existence. During a town dance, Foy attempts to humiliate Albert publicly, prompting Albert to challenge him to a gun duel at high noon the following day—a
suicide mission given Albert’s lack of actual combat experience.Meanwhile, Clinch Leatherwood arrives in town undetected, waiting for his gang to execute a major bank heist. While hiding out, Clinch discovers his wife’s association with Albert. Enraged by the perceived betrayal and driven by brutal jealousy, Clinch confronts Albert and forces him into a deadly ultimatum: Albert must face the notorious outlaw in a duel to the death at sundown, exactly when Foy's duel was also supposed to happen.Rather than fleeing, Albert embraces his newly found courage. He smears his bullets with deadly rattlesnake venom to level the playing field against the legendary gunfighter. When the showdown arrives, Albert faces Clinch in the dusty main street. Though Clinch manages to wound Albert, the venom takes effect just as Clinch prepares to deliver the killing blow, incapacitating the outlaw and allowing Albert to shoot him down. Clinch dies acknowledging Albert's newfound bravery. With the ruthless outlaw defeated and the town saved from terror, Albert’s cowardice is permanently cured. He rejects Louise’s desperate attempts to reconcile, choosing instead to build a genuinely passionate future with Anna, the woman who unlocked his true potential.
